Charles is a Sydney-based production designer and a recent graduate of the NIDA design course. Prior to attending NIDA, he studied architectural design at Monash University in Melbourne. In 2014, during his final year at NIDA, Charles was awarded the William Fletcher Foundation Award for emerging artists. In the same year he designed the original productions of Stephen Sewell's Kandahar Gate and Michael Gow’s Writing for Performance. He was delighted to continue collaborating with Michael in 2015 on a new opera production of Hansel and Gretel at the Queensland Conservatorium Theatre for which he designed the set and costumes. Also in 2015 Charles worked alongside Nick Schlieper and Simon Phillips designing miniatures for the original production of Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest (Melbourne Theatre Company).

In 2016, Charles designed costumes for Oh Mensch! for the Sydney Chamber Opera and was nominated for a Sydney Theatre Award for his set design for Samuel Hunter’s The Whale at the Old Fitzroy Theatre for which he also designed the costumes. Charles recently assisted designer Michael Hankin on several productions; The Great Fire and Twelfth Night for Belvoir, The Peasant Prince for Monkey Baa and Lake Disappointment for Carriageworks. He also continued working alongside Michael Scott-Mitchell in 2016 as the associate set designer for John Bell's new production of Carmen for Opera Australia.

Charles began 2017 designing Sydney Chamber Opera's original production of Biographica for Sydney Festival, directed by Janice Muller. He is currently designing the sets and costumes for The Coronation of Poppea for Pinchgut Opera, Buyer and Cellar and The Kitchen Sink for Ensemble and Smurf in Wanderland for Griffin / National Theatre of Parramatta.
